In the eastern part of the island of Tenerife, just 2 km from the centre of the capital of Puerto de la Cruz, there is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe (only Madrid's Real Jardín Botánico is older than it). This garden was founded by order of the Spanish king Charles III in 1788.
The park area is relatively small (only 20,000 m2), but here you can see up to 4,000 plant species from different parts of the world, many of which are rare or even unique, found only in the Canary Islands.
The garden also houses a library with over 30,000 herbarium specimens.
This beautiful, peaceful place is a real paradise filled with birdsong and lush foliage of tropical plants. The best time to visit the botanical garden is the end of winter and spring when shrubs and trees are in bloom.
The entrance ticket price is 3 euros.
