The following action is the first procession of the carnival along the city's main streets, with loud music, dazzling costumes, endless dances, firecrackers, and all kinds of street performances.
The key event is the main procession when hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets and join an exuberant parade with orchestras, stunning street performers, costumed street shows and much more! The action ends with a spectacular fireworks display and crowded jolly night parties, which last until the sunrise.
The last part of the carnival is not less spectacular. The three weeks lasting celebration ends with the funeral of the sardine, a ceremony during which a thirty-foot paper mache fish get taken through the streets of Santa Cruz escorted by mourning male "widows" dressed in miniskirts and fishnets.
