La Orotava is an ancient city in northern Tenerife, located 33 km from the island's capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Located in the Valley of La Orotava, the town preserved ancient architecture of houses, cobbled streets and tiled roofs. Due to the excellent climatic conditions in the valley, the city is surrounded by luscious greenery. It has the vastest expanse of the forest: roughly 78% of Teide National Park belongs to La Orotava. In addition to the green city gardens and squares, there is a botanical garden with rare plants representing the island's ornamental value.
The entire city almost feels like an outdoor museum, making walking its street a pleasant way to spend your time. However, to get to know the historical centre of La Orotava better, it is advisable to book an organized excursion. The local architecture has preserved buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, with marble columns and staircases, coloured facades and carved balconies of Canarian pine - a well-known feature of that time. Same as the carpets made of flowers and volcanic sand that are laid every year on the streets of La Orotava during the Corpus Christi celebrations and the traditional Holy Week festivities that have been taking place since the 17th century.
La Orotava municipality is also known for its fantastic beaches that are considered among the best on the island.
There is an opportunity to book a hotel or rent cheaper accommodation from the local owners for those wishing to stay longer in this city. However, accommodation prices depend on the season, so finding inexpensive housing during the holidays is almost impossible.
